Additional Thoughts
European Concern
There are several reasons for the great concern in Europe over Bush being US president for another four years.
One is the generally higher level of knowledge of his policies - and the effects of his policies internationally and within the US.
The other is that they recognize a pattern that is still fresh in their memory. Simple solutions to complex situations, a belief in the superiority of our country, the right to take what we need internationally to provide for our own needs (imperialism), the acceptance of violence and unilateralism to achieve goals, God and absolute Truth on our side. All these are a little too close to what happened in Germany in the 1930s...
Finding Purpose
To continue along the same line of thought... Germany in the 1920s and 30s experienced a great deal of problems (unemployment etc). People were looking for a strong leader with clear and simple solutions, and the will to push them through with little regard to the means. They were willing to initiate wars and let go of civil rights as long as they could feel good about themselves. Feel that they were part of something larger than themselves, aligned with the ultimate truth...
Sounds familiar?
